Practice Philosophy:

My goal is to help people improve and maintain wellness, in a compassionate and client-centered manner, using all the skills available to me within my scope of practice as a certified massage therapist, student of Healing Touch energy work, and Myofascial Release practitioner. My approach is to take the time to talk with you and understand, as well as I can, your wellness needs and goals--before, during, and after a session. Then I will draw from the breadth of my skills in manual therapies to support you in reaching your goals.

The core of my education is in Swedish massage; to this I add elements of active and passive stretching, trigger point release, fascial mobilization, deep tissue massage and Healing Touch energy work. As of April 2016, I now offer Myofascial Release, which is done separately from massage because no oil/lotion is used.  Brief summaries of these and hundreds of other types of bodywork are available at www.massagetherapy.com--click on "Bodywork Glossary."

Massage therapy is complementary to many other kinds of health and wellness care, and there are many, many ways to work with the body and boost wellness.  I regularly offer suggestions and referrals for additional care and guidance from other practitioners, as I want people to know what is available to them.

Why I do what I do:

Massage therapy is the convergence of several threads running through my life:

-A lifelong interest in holistic health--my own, my community's, and the world's health. I look for ways to restore balance in any system, be it in the body, in relationship, or in ecology.

-I have always been aware that respectful, caring touch helps me feel better.  Massage therapy training has taught me the physiological reasons for this, and how to share the gift of skilled, respectful, caring touch with others.

-I like to be active.  Desk jobs are not for me.  My work as a massage therapist is informed and energized by cross-country skiing, swimming, cycling, paddling, hiking, yoga, and gardening.  Past experience in Tae Kwon Do, Qi Gong, and Tai Chi Chih add valuable perspective.

A bit about me:

I am from Bemidji, MN--a place of fresh air, amazing sunsets, diverse ecology of lakes and pines and prairies, diverse people (Ojibwe, Dakota, Norwegians and Swedes, lumberjacks and students and entrepreuneurs and artists), co-ops, community and Winter. I have lived in other places--Winnipeg, Minneapolis, Oregon, New York , even Cameroon in Africa;;  those wonderful places widened my perspective and continue to enrich my life as I move into each new adventure.  Hello Shelton, WA!  As of January 2019, I live here now!

Wherever I am, I like to play outside, make music, garden, eat and promote local organic food, and practice compassionate communication, open-hearted listening and mindful being.
